Reflux & Heartburn (GERD): Physiotherapy in Brno

Persistent heartburn and acid reflux that medication only keeps in check? Physiotherapy can address one of the root causes — the diaphragm and the way you breathe. I'm one of the few physiotherapists in Brno who treats GERD this way.

Acid reflux and GERD are usually managed with medication that lowers stomach acid. That can bring relief, but it doesn't address why the reflux happens. In a large number of people, part of the problem lies in how the diaphragm — the main breathing muscle, which also helps keep the junction between the oesophagus and stomach closed — functions. When the diaphragm doesn't work well, the barrier against reflux weakens. And that is exactly where physiotherapy can help.

Why the diaphragm matters in reflux

The diaphragm and the lower oesophageal sphincter work together as an anti-reflux barrier. When breathing is shallow and the diaphragm is weak or poorly coordinated, this barrier becomes less effective and stomach contents can travel back up more easily. Poor posture, a hunched sitting position, and stress-driven shallow breathing all make it worse.

This is why medication alone often isn't the whole answer: it reduces the acid, but the mechanical cause — how the diaphragm holds the barrier — remains. Retraining the diaphragm and breathing can strengthen that barrier naturally.

What the research says

According to studies, targeted diaphragmatic breathing training has been shown to reduce reflux symptoms and, in some patients, decrease the need for acid-lowering medication. Breathing and diaphragm exercises are increasingly recognised as a useful complement to standard reflux care. In practice, this is exactly what I focus on.

How I treat reflux

1. Assessment

First I assess how you breathe, how your diaphragm moves, your posture, and the tension in the surrounding area. This shows whether your reflux has a functional, mechanical component that physiotherapy can influence.

2. Diaphragm & breathing retraining

The core of the therapy. I teach you to activate and coordinate the diaphragm correctly, restoring the natural anti-reflux barrier and calming shallow, stress-driven breathing.

3. Posture & habits

We address posture, the way you sit and move, and everyday habits that increase reflux, so the results last.

For many people, this approach reduces symptoms and reliance on medication. It does not replace your doctor's care — it complements it.

Please note: reflux and heartburn should always be assessed by a doctor first, to rule out other causes and confirm the diagnosis. Physiotherapy addresses the functional, diaphragm-related component — it is a complement to medical care, not a replacement. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain with shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, or unexplained weight loss.

I was scheduled for surgery on a damaged shoulder. Thanks to Filip I was eventually able to return to playing volleyball. He is thorough, looks for the root of the problem holistically, and respects the patient's physical limits.

I had been dealing with long-term back problems with many physiotherapists — mostly with only short-term effect. It was only with Mr. Chalupa that I achieved lasting, sustainable improvement.

Over the past 10 years I saw 5 physiotherapists. They always treated only the local area and helped only for a while. Mr. Chalupa looks for the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. By far the best physiotherapist I've visited.
