Sprained Ankle: Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy in Brno
A sprained ankle is not a trivial injury. It's the most common sports injury and the most commonly underestimated — because a poorly rehabilitated ankle tends to get injured again. I'll rehabilitate yours to be stronger than before.
An ankle sprain is the most common musculoskeletal injury. Most people treat it as a minor thing: a few days of limping, the swelling goes down, and that's it. But that's where the problem starts. An ankle that heals but isn't properly rehabilitated stays weak and unstable — a direct route to the next sprain and chronic instability.
Why a sprained ankle must not be underestimated
According to studies, a previous ankle sprain is the single strongest risk factor for another one. Around 20–40% of people develop chronic ankle instability after an acute sprain — the ankle repeatedly gives way and you stop trusting it, which over time raises the risk of early arthritis. Crucially, the earlier functional rehabilitation starts, the better: delaying it markedly increases residual instability. The later, the worse.
The acute phase: what to do right away
The modern approach is summed up as PEACE and LOVE, which replaced the old "just ice and rest": protect and offload briefly, elevate for swelling, avoid things that hamper healing in the very acute phase (be cautious even with anti-inflammatory drugs), and gradually load and move as pain allows — because movement supports healing more than long rest.
How I rehabilitate a sprained ankle
According to guidelines, an active exercise programme beats passive rest. The aim isn't to return the ankle to its pre-injury state, but to make it stronger and more confident than before: restore movement, build strength and endurance, retrain balance and reactions (this is where recurrence is decided), and return to sport by objective criteria, not by the calendar. A brace has its place as prevention when returning to sport, but it's not a substitute for rehabilitation.

What patients say
After 10 years of knee pain, he solved the problem in a focused, practical way with almost immediate effect. Mr. Chalupa is the right person for the job — at the first visit he sets expectations and explains everything so the session is as effective as possible.
Filip Chalupa is a great physiotherapist — absolute top. I'm a professional athlete and I've been through the hands of a huge number of physiotherapists. I trust Filip and see him regularly.
I was scheduled for surgery on a damaged shoulder. Thanks to Filip I was eventually able to return to playing volleyball. He is thorough, looks for the root of the problem holistically, and respects the patient's physical limits.
I had been dealing with long-term back problems with many physiotherapists — mostly with only short-term effect. It was only with Mr. Chalupa that I achieved lasting, sustainable improvement.
Over the past 10 years I saw 5 physiotherapists. They always treated only the local area and helped only for a while. Mr. Chalupa looks for the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. By far the best physiotherapist I've visited.
I visited Filip with a shoulder injury that had been bothering me for a couple of years. In the first visit I got a clear diagnosis and a plan, and things finally started improving.
